I'm working on fashion illustrations at the moment. I don't want them to look like historical characters, more like modern men who enjoy the past! I've picked up on the silhouette of the explorer to do this. I hope it will compliment my print designs which still need to be finalised and applied to the illustrations.

An illustration of the first flight. Not too sure about the text. Think it needs something but not sure if it's this yet. It is an aviation quote so does fit the theme and blends nicely with the aviation poster I did yesterday.

I have had a little play with art direction based illustration placing my illustrations into settings which convey a fashion lifestyle. They are only very rough at the moment to see if I like the aesthetic. I slightly touched on the mixing of these two mediums in the last project. I think I still have to play with illustration style and I have to get more photographs of atmospheric environments.

The top image background is from The Harmony Club in Alabama which was a gentleman's club converted into a home. It is a beautiful building and I'd like to scout for a similar location. Read about it here:

Fashion Lifestyle Installation Practise

I went on to accessorise the furniture to portray a fashion lifestyle through an installation piece. It is only a practise at the moment as I will use rugs and wooden floors opposed to the grass but I feel the tones and textures work well.

Busy Weekend

Last weekend I got to work turning my digital print samples into upholstered furniture for fashion lifestyle. I bought two chairs and recovered one and made a removable cushion pad for the second. I also made a plump overstuffed cushion which, like the pad was piped, a new skill I have learned.

This is my third experiment with istopmotion. It's a really fun process but does take some time. I like this animation and it's use of Scott Joplin's "Maple Tree Rag". It has yet to be finished. Humphry and Gilbert will go on an adventure on their tandem!

A Royal Wedding in Toy Town

Got a bit sidetracked today and thought I’d have a little go at the Royal Wedding Design Competition on "All Tropical". The top 20 get judged by the online community and the best gets printed and £180. As I already had the toy soldiers I created a prince and princess in the same vain to give the design “A Royal Wedding in Toy Town”. Doubt I’ll win but had fun doing it!

I like the stamps in the first image. They take a surprisingly long time to create but I really like the authenticity of them, perhaps I'm being too picky with fonts etc. but I do like the outcome. I hope to create more soon!

I discovered some really old binoculars. The box has "H. C Hudson 21st April 1914" written inside. They have really inspired me, I love the cracked leather, rusty buckles and neat top stitching.

These illustrations were inspired by Kate Wilson and Brett Ryder. I love Wilson's use of text, aged paper and cute, nostalgic drawing style. I like how Ryder references the past and see similarities in our styles.

My own drawing is a flying machine created in my imagination with a narrative aspect which is a feature I want to include in my work.

Hoardings Project

Students of Manchester Art School are collaborating with Ian Anderson of Designers Republic to have their images on the hoardings surrounding the new campus building while it is being built. We have been invited to have our pictures taken and digitally alter them to represent who we are as a designer.

Unfortunately my original photograph was disgusting, so lots of Photoshop to fix it! It isn't completely done yet and I might change it all together!

I've made myself into a drawing and done some textile design using more of my own illustrations and textures. It is about my handmade/ digital aesthetic which I think sums me up as a designer!

I have applied colour to my pencil drawing. I have used minimal colours as the cross hatching adds depth of colour but have used highlights for a 3 dimensional effect.

Murdock Installation

This is my final installation for my Murdock London project. I handmade the wallpaper strip using flock and the shaving kit and deer head are for added effect. I presented a look book of print designs and fashion illustrations with an accompanying journal.

The Wild Dandy A/W 2011 Trendbook

This is my trendbook which is also menswear autumn winter 2011 but this time a formalwear project. It is in anticipation of the London 2012 olympics and how I anticipate "Englishness" will come to the fore.

I combined exotic animal prints with formalwear because I was inspired by nature's endangered species and mixed it with mans endangered species "the dandy" to give wearable eccentricity. I feel it gives an air of modern vintage. I also experimented with illustration style combining my handrawn style with collage.

It has sparked a massive interest in mens formalwear and dandyism for me. I was lucky enough to have my work published on my favourite blog

"Sci-Fi Evolution"

This was a mens casualwear trend book for Autumn Winter 2011 focusing on the Apocalypse. It was inspired by the Mayan prophecy that the world will end in 2012 so is in anticipation of this should it occur. It looks to combine fashion, military and nature to inform a silhouette where the ultimate purpose is to protect. Dark colours with neon flashes are the basic colour palette.

The title of this project was "Laundry". I decided to study the technical engineering behind objects such as washing machines and plugs to create graphic designs. I also looked at the paraphenalia of laundry and used it as inspiration to create simple line drawings.

I decided to take these graphic designs through to menswear, mens underwear. Inspired by brands such as 'Ginch Gonch' and 'Bjorn Borg' I wanted to create fashionable boxer briefs for men aged 16-25. The culmination of the print designs were screen prints on cotton jersey. I also screen printed the elastic all with pigment dye. I then proceeded to make small half blanks of mens boxer briefs and printed on top of two pairs of plain briefs which I bought. I then created fashion illustrations of 'geek chic' to add to the quirky appeal of my designs.

Finally I gave my brand a name "Front Loader" and made original swingtags and packaging which really give a brand identity.

Modern Vintge

This unit was based on the title "collections". I am a keen collector of anything vintage or of interest to me. I have built up a collection of all sorts of objects over the years from charity shops, car boot sales and vintage shops. As a result this collection of designs was inspired by old jewellery, images from 1940s/ 1950s magazines, typewriters, vinyl and all sorts of paraphenalia which I own and which have had a life before I bought them. I used digital media such as Photoshop and mixed it with traditional elements such as embroidery and drawing.

I continued the vintage feel from print designs through to the style of clothing. I chose forties shapes with peplums and tailored touches to convey wartime fashion but updated them to suit a modern audience. I looked at dress patterns from past decades and updated the look through shortening hemlines and adjusting the silhouettes. As this is something I do as a hobby, altering old clothes to suit my modern preference, I found it quite easy.

Through the collection "Modern Vintage" I wanted to take vintage fashion and make it current. The digital media and cut of the garments are very now while the palette and styling have a very aged feel deriving from the inspiration of the past.

I enjoyed making this collection, it was my first real attempt at fashion illustration and print designs and am therefore pleased with the outcome.

Notes:

-Swingtags designed on Photoshop inspired by Amy Winehouse's Lyrics and the Lyrics of her musical inspirations e.g. The Ronettes 'Be my baby'. Themes of obsessive love and meltdown in the tags can be seen as representative of Amy's life.

-Tags also reference Amy Winehouse tattoos

- Some embroidered tags are Amy Winehouse quotes

- Relation and inspiration from Sir Walter Raleigh's poem "My Last Will" also representative of Amy Winehouses sad life. Oxford University students were asked to compare Raleigh's writings with those of Winehouse's therefore research led me to this inpiration.

My Blog has Moved House and Changed Name

Originally I was working on Wordpress but wasn't getting on with it too well and eventually stopped posting altogether. I've decided to give blogging another go and had a slight tweak of name, 'Handmade Theories' not 'Handmade Theory' anymore! Plural times!

Ok so I plan on updating you with the work I have done in my first year of Uni at Manchester Metropolitan where I've been studying Textile Design for Fashion. I admit to being a bloody bad blogger (tongue twister there) but will get on the case!
